Seph7z is a young artist from the Bronx. He’s got his own unique sound and is definitely worth a listen. He’s also got some good advice to give, so keep reading.
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
My name is Seph7z, I’m a 17 year old artist from the Bronx, New York. Being from here, I never had it super easy growing up.
I was never super bad, like my mom and dad made sure I was always good, but I’ve had people I’ve grown up with on my block pass due to being in the streets. And, I’ve also never been able to see anyone outside of my family who is really as loyal as they say they are.
I be feeling stuck sometimes because it seems when I show love, it normally rarely comes back, but just like most kids I love music, video games, and all arts. I use them to escape my surroundings sometimes.
I tried my hand at YouTube, Twitch streaming, and was a graphic designer because anytime I’ve had a normal job it has just never felt right, like my potential is on a way bigger stage.
How did you get started making music? Who or what inspired you?
My first time in a studio is when I decided music was going to be what I pursued. A friend of mine wanted to make a song, and brought me to the studio with him. That night I went home and downloaded some free recording software, and used a cheap mic I had from when I made YouTube videos, and just searched for type beats.
Looking back though, even from the start, my music has always been a reflection of my life at a current time. I could go back to a song months ago, and it would sound completely different and pull from different emotions.
My biggest inspiration is Juice Wrld, I found him before “All Girls Are The Same” even dropped on an old EP. Watching him evolve his sound, and how talented he was, made me want to be like that. I listened to everything he said, any advice in any interview. He was bigger than music to me and millions of others, and that’s what I want to be when I become a superstar.
How would you describe your sound?
I’d describe my sound as my own. It’s obviously hip hop, but with elements of pop and rock in it as well, and that comes from my youth being just at the end of when pop was really the mainstream sound.
I feel like going into 2020, I’ve started creating my own sound. Most of my unreleased recordings in this past month sound nothing like my 2019 music. I felt that I really needed to stamp my own sound and start finding what makes me different.
If you had to choose a favorite song of yours, what would it be?
I make so much music every week, and so many different types that its hard to pick one. My top 3 would be my latest release “Back to Back”, an unreleased song dropping March 3rd called “Lil Sosa”, and “Codeine Fleece” which dropped in December 2019.
All of those songs are ones I can always turn to max volume no matter the mood, and they never seem out of place, but just a step above everything else.
Have you ever ran into difficulties making music?
I don’t write any of my music, but if I do write it’s because I’m not anywhere near a place I can record, and my producer @chexbeats sends me a beat that I feel is just too good to pass up.
Most of the time, since I love being in the studio, the most difficult thing is actually when I run out of things to say or because I haven’t been going out and experiencing life. My music starts to reflect that and begins to kind of all sound the same.
What advice would you give to those musicians just starting out?
My advice would be to always remember there are 7 billion people on the planet. So, if you make a song and 10 people you know don’t like it, there are 10 people who will.
Just because people don’t like your music doesn’t meant they can’t like you. So, remember to make yourself a brand more than just a person who makes music, because someone can still become a fan of you as a brand, and that helps because you’re still gaining supporters.
